Ensuring Sustainable Biodiesel
The Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS), recently expanded under the 2007 Energy Bill, includes a requirement that specifies biomass diesel fuels must meet a threshold of 50% carbon reduction over petroleum. NBB is committed to working with the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that biodiesel meets this threshold and continues to be a sustainable and renewable fuel.
Biodiesel is already an excellent renewable fuel when you consider that soy-based biodiesel has a 78% carbon dioxide reduction over petroleum. In addition, The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that U.S. acreage for crop production has not increased since 1959. But, we all need to be diligent in ensuring that all sources of U.S. based biodiesel are grown and produced in a sustainable way.
Leading biodiesel producer-marketer Renewable Energy Group announced a program for truck stops yesterday that it hopes will make an array of biodiesel blending options more accessible to truckers nationwide.
